隨著高通量測序的發展，越來越多的物種被測序。無參轉錄組是指在沒有參考基因組的情況下，對真核生物的轉錄組進行測序，然后從頭組裝轉錄組（de novo），進行unigene的表達，差異和功能注釋等分析，為深入研究該物種提供研究方向和思路。
由于絕大部分已知物種是沒有參考基因組的，因此該方法特別適用于研究新物種。
